So I have been researching through the many themes and endless possibilities for this project and after a few shaky moments it's finally decided and the theme is.......
Art deco architecture...
Not my first choice I fully admit this...but I was amazingly inspired by the imagery and texture that is portrayed in the buildings of the time that all these ideas started to pop into my head and my instinct was just too go with it.
I first of all listed exactly what I needed for this project to fulfill the module.
· Research sketchbook
· Mood boards
· Fabrics
· Design development and boards
· Final boards -Including full image and flats mood board and inspiration imagery.
I decided to trawl the library and the internet for the best images I could find. As well as background information on Art Deco and the 1920's style of fashion and beauty. I found some really gorgeous images of the Chrysler building, and this set me off onto a tangent.
I wanted to be able to create something reflecting the shapes portrayed, playing on tonal shades instead of just black on White. Looking at different shades of a colour. Art deco of it's time was seen as an elegant, glamorous, functional and modern. It’s based upon mathematical, geometric shapes an eclectic mix of elegant and stylish modernism.
I also looked at art references of the time, the likes of Erte and George Barbier, but for some reason although it comes hand in hand I didn’t feel the same connection as I did with the architecture I had looked at.
I then decided to look at contemporary references of how other designers had brought this era to life. Holly Fultons collection as shown in the images iv already uploaded show a very quirky take with a really big influence of print and simple design aesthetic.
