After i had looked at RTW and Couture I then went on to investigate the key trends for Spring/Summer 2011. I trawled through many magazines, websites, and catwalk shows and this is what I think will be big come Spring/Summer 2011......

Biker Chic – it would seem that after the fad of the aviator jacket and everything airplanes, s/s 11 will see the revival of the biker jacket. Many designers have taken the biker jacket and revamped it with shape and embellishment, to give the biker jacket an overhaul and elegant revamp.

Bright Colours – From neon to brights’ it would seem colour is the key to bring summer in style. Blocks of colour, or even just a hint against a dark contrast works.

Martin Grant S/S 2011

Fendi S/S 2011

Big Blooms - From floral jumpsuits to dresses,  it looks like as the flowers blossom so will our wardrobes.

Louis Vuitton S/S 2011

Jill Sander S/S 2011

Back to the Seventies - So its time to mix it up again...... waistlines are creeping back up as the leg-line flows out. An array of wide leg trousers, kaftan's, head scarves and platform shoes have all taken centre stage on the catwalks. With luxurious colours like sapphire and emeralds to warm it up.

Derek Lam S/S 2011

Ferragamo S/S 2011

Marc Jacobs S/S 2011

Baring in mind all the things I have looked at, I now have to pick a theme suitable for the project.

I firstly after a mad film session decided to look at Audrey Hepburn after watching… Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Sabrina and Funny face in one night. I had so many ideas running through my head about silhouette, different designs that I could create based upon this great iconic figure. But when it came to it there wasn’t anything substantial that I could research that hadn’t already been done ?!?!?!?

So I went back to the drawing board and decided to go in a very different direction too look at art deco but most importantly art deco architecture. From this i can then collate a broad range, and cross section of both primary and secondary research to tell the story of my theme.........

Blast from the past...............Chanel autumn/winter 1991

I was trawling the web to find good examples of historical pret a porter.........the latest i could find was this video from Chanel's A/W 1991 catwalk show. Well what can i say im speechless........

The beginning………

Our first module’s AD203 and AD208 were fortunate enough to be part sponsored by `MaoCouture’.

Anh Mao

Who is MaoCouture ???

In September 2006, Anh Mao started her business, MaoCouture, which specialises in imaginative, striking and versatile bridal and evening wear. She started out in the corner of her garage armed with two very old sewing machines. She wrote down all of her different ideas about how her ambitions could be accomplished using as little money as possible.

She has since designed for Miss England and Miss World, and has sat on the judging panel for the Miss and Mr. England final. Her dream of moving the business from her home to a commercial space was realised in 2008 after the demand from her clients reached boiling point. Anh opened the MaoCouture Designer Boutique on Station Road in South Gosforth, which stocks exquisite cocktail and evening dresses.

The brief was too research, design and go onto make a prom/evening dress.

To begin this module, I first investigated both Haute Couture and prêt a porter. I looked at both historical and contemporary examples.

What is Haute Couture.....???

"High Sewing/Stitching'" Haute Couture is the production of one off pieces, it is an extremely high quality made garment made from luxurious fabrics, embellished and hand crafted. They are made to measure garments that sell in the exclusive end of the market and can sell in excess of tens of thousands of pounds.

Haute Couture items are usually displayed within fashion shows on models, then the client will choose the item they want, this is then made to fit them and they have no idea of what the garment will look like on until its complete.

  • This is a great historical example of Charles Frederick Worth who was widely considered as the Father of Haute couture, he was an English fashion designer of the 19th century, whose works were produced in Paris.

What is prêt a porter.....???

Prêt a porter is the term for factory made clothing produced by many couture houses as a more profitable and affordable range. This is due to the higher volume turnover of garments, and greater availability of the clothing. Many designers have these diffusion collections. The collections tend to be smalls runs in multiples of hundreds and thousands so to still have their exclusivity. They are manufactured at a high quality but on an industrial scale, with a high price tag as attention to detail is still meticulous. This level still allows the customer to have the exclusivity of wearing a designer item, but they are able to select the garment in their size and know what it looks like there and then unlike couture.

Got too start someplace ?!?!

I am currently studying a FdA Fashion and as part of my final year i have been given the task of creating a blog...........

This will consist of me reflecting and evaluating my progression throughout my final year. I will do this by documenting my developments and achievements in the modules i am completing, so that i can evaluate my strenghths and weaknesses. From this i can then create a personal development plan, and this will allow me too reflect on my own progress throughout the year.

I can start of by saying i know my biggest weakness is writing about myself, so this is going to be hard and certainly test and stretch my abilities!!!! But hopefully all-in-all will boost my confidence.
